  99. The Candlewood Amateur Radio Association (CARA) will sponsor the 
  100. 1994 Connecticut QSO party, to be held 30 JUL 2000 to 31 JUL 0400 
  101. UTC and 31 JUL 1200-2000 UTC.  Bands will be 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 
  102. 10, 6 & 2m.  Stations may be worked once per mode on each band.  
  103. CARA will operate W1AW (the ARRL station Hiram Maxim memorial 
  104. station) on Sunday, 31 JUL. As well the club station, W1QI, will 
  105. operate throughout the contest.

  107. Plaques will be awarded to first place CT stations for several 
  108. categories.  Certificates will be awarded first place stations in 
  109. other states, as well as second and third place in all states.

  156. When I was relicensed in 1973 (or so) as KA1CV, I used to cause quite a
  157. pileup on 40M in the morning. I was an avid QRPer with a marginal antenna,

  159. assumed I was a ham stationed in Japan. :-) Most of 'em were quite nice
  160. about it.

  240. Sandy's reply speaks the truth. Also, just because a ham has a TNC or
  241. operates packet does not necessarily mean he uses one of the few 
  242. internet-to -packet gateways in the U.S.  Many of the gateways may or may
  243. not support "normal" AX.25 packet users, or just amateur TCP/IP nodes.
  244. Check local listings for time and station, find out what your intended
  245. addressee is doing with packet radio. Better yet, get a ham license and 
  246. join the fun on the air.

  277. I use a W2A on my Beemer.  The radio is clipped with the standard belt
  278. clip to the pocket of my leather tank cover.  I use the "mini" speaker
  279. mic in the helmet with an earphone plugged into the socket provided on
  280. the mic.  I use a Diamond SG7500 antenna mounted on a bracket I made 
  281. from 1" square tubing.  This antenna works OK, but if I did it again
  282. I would opt for a Larson 2/70.  I use the diamond as it has a nice 
  283. fold-over feature for putting the cover on the bike.
  284.  
  285. I use the standard HT battery.  I made a mic harness with a switch
  286. in line so that the PTT is now on the left handlebar just inboard of'
  287. the horn button.  
  288.  
  289. I tried using the standard rubber antenna, but it only worked in areas
  290. with excellent repeater coverage.

  292. I've used this setup for 3 years with no problems.  Radio seems to 
  293. take the vibration and the twice daily plugging/unplugging without
  294. complaint.  I ride 33 miles each way to work daily.

  315. While this is quite correct from a practical point of view, a quick scan
  316. of the HTX-202 schematic leads me to believe the RF portion is capable of
  317. tuning across a wider range than 144-148MHz, but (a) you'd need to re-peak
  318. the front-end tuning circuit for the band segment of interest (which
  319. implies that you could only tune approximately 4Mhz) and (b) the controller
  320. CPU won't program the PLL chip out of band.
  321.  
  322. For example, if you had a dead HTX-202 which had a good RF portion but the
  323. CPU was bad, and you wanted to experiment, you could indeed feed a TTL
  324. level serial stream to the PLL chip (an MC145170) to play around.  The
  325. serial TTL stream format is determined by looking at the '170 data sheet
  326. and HTX-202 (which phase detector and oscillator is used?).  It is quite
  327. easy to write a little program on a PC to use the parallel port calculate
  328. and send the serial data to the '170.
  329.  
  330. Bottom line:  stock radio can't be modified for out of band use without
  331. losing the stock functionality.

  446. All repeaters in Australia are carrier-operated, but the encroaching pager
  447. interference (148-150) will probably see some of them adopt CTCSS.  All
  448. repeaters are "open" by the way.

  450. There simply aren't as many repeaters here, because private ownership of
  451. a repeater is not permitted, although I have no doubt that there are a
  452. few boot-leg ones around, protected by CTCSS....
  453.

  471. Jeff, your remark intrigues me.  I have yet to get my license, since I'm still
  472. a few weeks away from the test, but I can see that call signs are a very
  473. personal part of amateur radio.  Why do you like your old 2x3 call sign better
  474. than the higher ranked 2x2?

  476. I've heard that there once was a time when "preferred" call signs could be
  477. obtained, like personalized license plates I suppose.  Too bad we can't
  478. have that any more, though I do hope there's a small chance of me getting
  479. the call sign K7LID.
